Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 vs. Note 5 Pro: What's the Difference?

Following its runaway success in 2017 in the Indian market, Xiaomi started off 2018 on a very positive note. Capitalizing on the success of Redmi Note 4, the Chinese brand launched Redmi Note 5 in India as a Valentine’s Day event. The Redmi Note 5 Pro was launched soon after in February 2018 itself. Both Redmi mobile phones might look very similar due to their display, but there are a few notable differences.

Processor and Storage

The Redmi Note 5 Pro is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, pared with the Adrena 509 GPU. The base variant is 4GB RAM with 64GB storage, while the higher end variant has 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The storage is expandable to 128GB via a microSD card.

Redmi Note 5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. This one also comes in two variants: 3GB RAM + 32GB internal storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, which is expandable to 128GB via microSD.

Operating System

Both Redmi mobile phones run on Android Nougat 7.1.1 with MIUI 9 on top. The operating system can be updated to Android Oreo.

Camera

Redmi Note 5 Pro gets a dual rear camera setup, with a 12MP+5MP lens with two RGB sensors. The front camera is 20MP with LED flash. The Note 5 has a single 12MP rear camera, with a 5MP selfie shooter with LED flash.

Display

Both smartphones sport the same 5.99-inches display with ultra-thin bezels on the side, 18:9 aspect ratio and onscreen buttons. The display resolution is 2160 x 1080 pixels, full HD+. The contrast ratio on Redmi Note 5 Pro is 1500:1, higher than the Redmi Note 5 at 1000:1. Both devices come with a layer of 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass on top, with rounded display corners that boasts the look and feel of a premium phone.

Other Features

The audio jack is placed on top for the Note 5 and on the bottom for the Pro. The circular fingerprint scanner remains on the back for both phones. Both phones have a 4000mAh battery on board.

The main difference between the two Redmi mobile phones is their price, with the Note 5 available at a starting price of ₹9,999 and the Pro at a starting price of ₹13,999. The best part is that with the easy availability of financing options that include zero interest EMIs, you can opt for the higher end versions without feeling the pinch.
